(6-8): It's Elemental
presented by Deb Zoda (Bastrop ISD), Deb Sampson (Bastrop ISD), Ginni Smith (Bastrop ISD)
Curriculum Developed by The MIDAS Project and Bastrop ISD

Discover methods to integrate the teaching of the rather abstract concepts of chemistry and the elements of the periodic table. These hands-on, integrated activities will help your students grasp the properties and uses of Calcium and Gold and will help answer the questions “Who cares about protons and electrons?” and “Why do we need to learn this?”. Workshop participants will receive a binder with integrated lesson plans suitable for Social Studies, Language Arts, Math and Science as well as suggestions for electives.

It's Elemental: Gold

Why is gold valuable? Delve into the historical, chemical, and economic factors that have made gold so important to human societies throughout time. Journey into the Old West during the 1849 Gold Rush to see how gold dramatically changed the lives of the individuals involved and the nation. Delve into the effects that the mining of gold and other elements have had on the environment.

It's Elemental: Calcium

We all know that calcium makes strong bones and teeth and is a component of one's general good health. This workshop analyzes the widespread uses and properties of calcium. Explore the benefits of calcium and its compounds in such areas as health, industry, and geology—in both natural and synthetic states.
