(6-12): HEADS UP: Providing cutting-edge research for your students and exciting them about health science careers!
presented by Nathalie Sessions, BBA, The University of Texas School of Public Health, Yazmin Azeem, Marguerite Bagwell, Angie Paiz
Curriculum Developed by The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston – School of Public Health

Health Education And Discovering Science while Unlocking Potential

The workshop will introduce participants to all six HEADS UP modules. HEADS UP features research-based material designed by teachers and field experts for middle and high school students. Materials are aligned with TEKS and National Science Education Standards. DVDs feature video vignettes with a real life cast of students interacting with actual scientists and other health science professionals, and are supported with attention-grabbing graphics. DVDs also include short video biographies highlighting numerous types of science-related careers. The career story videos are also available via the HEADS UP web site and the UT Health Science Center’s iTunes U. Teacher CDs contain classroom activities that expand upon topics introduced in the videos and also include teacher information sheets, glossaries, TAKS prep, assessment tools, and additional resources.

HEADS UP raises test scores and interest in science! In a quasi-experimental matched comparison study involving a three-year prospective cohort of primarily Hispanic inner-city middle school students, HEADS UP demonstrated significant increases in Stanford 10 Achievement scores in science and interest in science.

Workshops will be co-facilitated by teachers who have successfully implemented HEADS UP. Participants will view sneak previews of content videos and career story videos and be guided through several classroom activities featured in the material. Each participant will receive two modules of their choice complements of the conference hosts and the HEADS UP project!
