(K-2): Promoting Early Literacy Skills with Nonfiction Text: Creating Cross-Curricular Connections
presented by Maria Tamez, MAT, Education Consultant, Region 4 ESC
Curriculum Developed by Maria Tamez, MAT, Education Consultant, Region 4 ESC

Participants will explore ways to utilize nonfiction text in order to build vocabulary and comprehension. Each participant will receive a high-interest nonfiction book along with ideas for supporting early readers through effective questioning strategies and activities that engage students in making cross-curricular connections.

Participants will:

  • leave with a colorful, high-interest nonfiction book written with the beginning reader in mind.
  • explore hands-on instructional techniques to extend comprehension and promote higher order thinking skills such as storyboarding and choice cards.
  • partake in a reader-response activity using a graffiti wall for interactive writing and experience first-hand the benefits of using this instructional technique to differentiate instruction while reinforcing reading, writing, and research skills.

Maria Tamez, MAT, is a Reading Education Specialist employed at Region 4 Education Service Center. She develops products and provides professional development workshops for K-2 educators. Among the products she has created are K-2 Tier II intervention curricula, Multisensory Literacy Activities, and most recently nonfiction lap books for teaching students how best to navigate expository texts.
